In the fall of 1975 and the spring of 1976, I helped Thor cut and shape the logs that became the walls of the cabin, as well as the ridge log and roof. A great time of bonding with a great guy, and that bond lasted over the subsequent years. I will miss a man that did so much for so many. Here are a few pics from when we worked together at du Nord in the mid 70’s. Dave Lee

Thor exemplified the generous heart and has never been far from our thoughts. We met Thor on our first trip to DuNord in 1980. One morning we were asked if we had met Thor yet. The staff member who asked thought we would get along with him quite well. Off to find this mystery man. That began a wonderful friendship full of terrific memories. When a decision was made by the Board that left me frustrated he would take me aside to listen and mentor. He invited my family to the cabin and played his accordion for us. We learned later how special that had been. He always made a point of coming to see us when we showed up at camp. Seeing Thor was like coming home. One day always stands out. My husband decided to give Thor a run for his money. We were up for a work weekend. My husband suggested the pictographs could stand attention. He suggested a few volunteers could suspend someone - Thor - over the ledge with paint and brushes. Perhaps a parking lot and a McDonalds would be be a good idea. Thor’s reaction was predictable and very funny. There was an instant when I wasn’t sure if he thought my husband was serious about the parking space. Game on! Long history of practical jokes. When my mother didn’t show up after an orienteering exercise, Thor was the first person to look for Mom and made sure she was okay when she showed up. For that alone I will always be grateful. Enough. There are many more stories that came flooding in when our daughter told us this morning about Thor’s passing. He will always have a very special place in our lives. He will be missed.

During a ski trip to Norway Thor skied from the cabin at Kallvatne towards the Swedish border. Posting a picture of the expedition plus one of him resting on reindeer skins outside the cabin.
