Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joseph Bernard Schulte, Jr. January 4, 1944 - April 16, 2025 East Side, St. Paul, Minnesota It is with both heavy hearts and joyful memories that we announce the passing of Joseph Bernard Schulte, Jr. - a man who exemplified service, humor and unconditional warmth throughout his life. Born and raised on the East Side of St. Paul, Joe dedicated his life to family, community and his country, leaving a memorable mark on everyone he met. At the age of 18, Joe answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. Over an extraordinary 42-year military career, he served as a paratrooper, bridge engineer, and cook. After three years of active duty in Germany, he continued his commitment to our country through civil service for the Army, eventually retiring with the distinguished rank of Master Sergeant E8. In retirement, his passion for people led him to work part-time as a tax preparer at H&R Block, where his kind words and humorous stories brightened the days of those around him. His service extended well beyond the military as he was an active member of the American Legion Post 450 and a trusted election judge. Joe was known for his larger-than-life personality and his ability to make every encounter unforgettable. Ever the jokester he would fondly declare his resemblance to “Denzel Washington,” a man who he said he respected for his family and Christian values. Joe treated strangers as if they were old friends, always ready with a compliment or funny anecdote. His story is one marked by loyalty, laughter, and a genuine love for every person he met. Whether he was sharing a hearty meal (spaghetti, soup, or chili were his favorite) offering his expertise in the most unexpected moments, or simply brightening a room with his hearty greetings, of “Hi everyone I’m Joe” as he walked into a quite waiting area, or restaurant, or “Excuse me good looking guy coming through” in a crowded place, his spirit was one of joy and inclusiveness. He believed that every day was an opportunity to celebrate life—a belief he shared with everyone he encountered. In his free time, Joe cherished the moments spent with family and friends. Whether fishing, dancing, enjoying a spirited bingo night, or dreaming about that next lottery win, he savored life’s simple pleasures. He was not only skilled in the kitchen—where his passion for cooking brought people together—but also was the first in his family to celebrate his birthday and wouldn't let anyone forget it. Joe’s dedication extended into his community and faith. A beloved volunteer at New Life Church in Woodbury, MN, he enriched the lives of children in the Cubbies program and contributed wholeheartedly to AWANAS. His deep knowledge of the Bible and his passionate love of God left an indelible mark on everyone. In every service and volunteer role he embraced, Joe exemplified the spirit of kindness and commitment. Joe was born to Joseph B. Schulte and Evelyn J. Schulte (Franzen) and grew up on the East Side of St. Paul. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, his brothers Donny Tinkham, Dale Tinkham, and Duke Schulte, and his sisters Barb Wegscheider and Linda Koleber, and former wife Darlene Schulte. He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Anita Duren Schulte; siblings Judy Tompkins, Dennis Tinkham, and Kathy Bartholomew; and his children: Joseph B. Schulte III (Sara), JoLynn Schulte-Wenberg (Craig), LeAnn Roberson (Frank), and Jim Duren (Donna). Joe’s legacy further blossoms in his 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, who will forever remember him as the life of every family gathering and the man who always reminded them just how beautiful life could be. Joseph lived a life of service, laughter, and boundless love—a life that showed us how to serve our country with honor, embrace community with a full heart, and celebrate every moment as a gift. His spirit will continue to illuminate the lives of all who were lucky enough to share in his journey. Though he has departed from this world, his legacy of kindness and joy lives on in the memories, the smiles, and the stories we will continue to share. As we gather to remember Joe today, we honor not only his many achievements and his life of service, but also the remarkable man he was—warm, magnetic, and deeply genuine. Joe had a way of making everyone feel like family, and his beautiful soul inspired us to love more freely, laugh more often, and live with passion. In saying goodbye to a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, we carry with us his legacy—one marked by kindness, humor, and quiet strength. His memory remains a shining light, guiding us to embrace each moment fully and to meet the world, just as he did, with a smile and an open heart.
