Joan Marie Smith (Carlson)

Age 79, June 21, 1945 - May 4, 2025

Preceded in death by husband Royal (55 years of marriage), parents, Henning & Florence; brother David and many other beloved relatives.

Survived by sister Judy Toft and brother Don Carlson; sisters-in-laws Sue (Thomas) Pihl and Mona Smith; children Scott (Michelle) Smith, Heidi (Kjell) Ferris, and Todd Smith (Katy Prenevost); cherished grandchildren Madeline, Tyler, Gabrielle, Eleanor, Iris, Owen, and Avery; many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

Joan grew up on the East Side of St. Paul and graduated from Johnson High School in 1963. She married Royal in 1967, and they built their home in Oakdale, enjoying the trees, birds, deer and gardens. Joan taught in the St. Paul and Stillwater school districts before beginning a career in real estate in 1981. She loved the North Shore, world travel and time at Turtle Lake. Joan will be remembered for her generosity, kindness and community spirit.

A service will be held Monday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Mahtomedi, with visitation at 9:30 a.m. and lunch to follow service.
