Eugenia Cherny
October 9, 1938 – July 13, 2025
Eugenia Cherny passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. In a deeply meaningful moment, she departed this life on what would have been her 62nd wedding anniversary with her beloved late husband, John Cherny.
Eugenia was born on October 9, 1938, in Poltava, Ukraine. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Austria, and later to Brazil, where she spent much of her teenage years. In 1962, she immigrated to the United States and made her home in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Soon after arriving, Eugenia met the love of her life, John. They married and built a warm and loving home, raising three children near their church and remaining deeply connected to the Ukrainian community.
Eugenia was a woman of strength, grace, and deep devotion to her family and heritage. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life—gardening, flowers, cooking, decorating her home, and listening to music. She had a special love for animals, and her home reflected warmth, care, and tradition. Her kitchen was a source of comfort and celebration, especially her homemade bread and famously delicious varenyky.
She dedicated 35 years of her professional life to West Publishing, where she was respected for her hard work and commitment. Eugenia also gave generously of her time, always caring for others and staying actively involved in the church and Ukrainian community, often lending a helping hand to those in need.
Eugenia leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. She was preceded in death by her husband John Cherny; parents Ivan and Maria Hupalo; brothers Greg Hupalo and Alex Hupalo. She is survived by her sister Olga Edens, children; Zina (Mike) Och; Lida (Scott) Wilson; Victor (Kris) Cherny; as well as 7 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild, along with many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Katherine Orthodox Church in Arden Hills, MN on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 10AM with a visitation starting at 9:30AM. Interment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Maplewood, MN following the service.
