Age 87, of St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, at United Hospital, following a brief period in hospice care, surrounded by his loving family and cherished friends. He was born on January 15, 1939, in St. Paul to Genevieve and William Claugherty, and spent a life focused on family, kindness, and plenty of laughter along the way.
Donald was the steady foundation of his family, a devoted husband, proud father, loving grandfather, brother, and loyal friend. Family was not just important to him; it was his purpose. He married the love of his life, Juanita Borth, on October 19, 1968, and together they built a life centered on family, happiness, and countless cherished memories.
As a proud member of the United States Marine Corps, he carried himself with honor, discipline, and courage, values that guided him throughout his life and inspired all who knew him. He spent over 30 years working as a butcher, a craft he approached with skill, pride, and dedication, providing for his family and serving his community.
Donald was strong and hardworking, yet also warm, compassionate, and full of heart. A kind word, a helping hand, or one of his genuine hugs could lift the spirits of anyone around him, and his laughter and caring nature left a lasting impression. He will be remembered with deep love and appreciation by all who were fortunate to know him.
Donald is survived by his children, Brenda Gruber and her husband Charles, Lynnita Bergstrom and her husband Tom, Duane Peel, Bruce Peel, Shelly L’Allier and her husband Ron, and David Claugherty; his many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Juanita Claugherty, his daughter Laura Peel, and his son Jeff Claugherty.
