Obituary of Doris Edge

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Doris Elaine Hartquist Edge was born April 3, 1923 to Olga and Arnold Hartquist of St. Paul. She grew up alongside her two brothers, Milton and Warren, a dog named Buck, and cats named Thomasina and Seeka. She had a close relationship with her cousins and their families. At a young age, she discovered a love of music and began piano lessons from her long-time teacher Maude Nelson. She enjoyed singing, drawing and reading. Doris had many friends and good sense of humor. She graduated from Johnson High School in 1941 and worked locally doing office work for several years before joining the U.S. Navy (WAVES – Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) in 1944. She chose that branch of the service because she thought she looked best in their uniform hat! After basic training she was stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida as a Link trainer, teaching pilots how to read their instrument panel. She served until 1948. She enjoyed the Navy so much she continued her service in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1949-1961. During this period, she also attended the University of Minnesota on the G.I. Bill and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music. In 1956 she married Richard Edge. In 1961 she retired from the Naval Reserves upon learning she was pregnant with her first daughter, Anne. In 1965 her second daughter, Amy, was born. She and Richard lived in their St. Paul home until her death. Doris was a piano teacher to generations of Eastside youngsters (and some adults) for more than 50 years. She loved crossword puzzles, reading, scrapbooking, spending time with family, friends and entertaining. She was known for her gentle nature and her kind spirit and loved a good joke. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and lover of cats. Doris Edge, age 97 of Saint Paul, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Milton and Warren; and former son-in-law, Dean. Doris is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Richard “Dick”; daughters, Anne Sonnee and Amy (William) Sheehan; and grandchildren, Katelyn Sonnee (Jordan LeClair), Samantha Sonnee, Brendan Sheehan, and Kayla Sheehan. Visitation is from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, followed by a 7:00 PM Memorial Service on Monday, March 29, 2021 at Anderson Funeral Home, 1401 Arcade Street (Hwy 61), Saint. Paul.
