I met John in 1973 when I began my first session as a page in the State Senate. Senator Milton was popular with the pages. We tended to not care which side of the aisle they were on. We liked senators who were kind and friendly and had a sense of humor, with mega extra points for those who bothered to know our names.
Decorum was a concept that was continually drilled into our heads - it seemed like there were a million rules. So when Senator Milton got kicked out of chambers for wearing a turtleneck that famous day we were jolted. When he handled the situation by borrowing a tie from one of the male pages we felt in on the joke and we laughed forever.
Over many years, I ended up running into John many more times, long after we had both left the capitol. Once of those times was at a book reading he did when "For the Good of the Order" was published. The book is wonderful and it was nice to be able to tell him so in person. He beautifully captured the spirit of Nick Coleman and that very special time in Minnesota politics. The book is a treasure. And so is its author.
I'm so happy to have known him.

John, while sadness fills the hearts of those who loved you, I believe you're in a better place. My wife, Mary, arrive there a short time ago. I believe that you, Mary and many of those who instilled beautiful memories in our hearts will be seen again by those waiting for a different and better life. Watch over Maureen and find ways to resurface in her life and give her comfort. She was always very kind to me at Metro State and is an amazing lady. God bless.

Dear Maureen and all John’s family,
to meet John one day around 2001 at the Academia Marshall it was one of the best gifts live has made me.
When he told me that he was writing a novel on Enrique Granados, I must admit that I get surprised and even skeptical, because Granados was a musician with a romantic aurea which is difficult to portrait without melting too much imagination. But when I read the manuscript afterwards, I get still more shocked to confirm that John made a novel with such a detailed research and such a comprehension of the artist and the historical period, and so the Catalan society, that I enjoyed and learned a lot about this great name of the Sapnish classical music that I couldn’t decline to translate it to Catalan and Spanish language.
Granados became our deep link to make grow a friendship unique with plenty of great moments in Spain and in the States with him and you, Maureen, and also with Bob Goff and Phyllis Rawls, who I met thanks to John in Barcelona and he gave me another live gift with their so extraordinarily generosity.
I also get to know his greatdaughter Queen to whom I send her all my affection through here.
I would write an enterely book about him. Someone should do it to show that a human being like John is a bless for humanity and that those who enjoyed him through life are extremely fortunate and we keep the treasure of his heart.
His spirit will be always with us.
Una forta abraçada, John.

John was an exceedingly special person to us. He was engaging, genuine, had a wonderful sense of humor and although he was so accomplished, he was always humble and accessible. John and Maureen’s visit to our home in Plymouth, MI was always such a joy! We drank Cava, ate John’s delicious Paella, listened to romantic Spanish Guitar music and had the most fascinating conversations. After dinner, John and my husband Tom would play guitars together. Truly always magical times.
We will never forget our stunning trip led by John to his favorite Spain, the home of the Protagonist of his massive book, The Fallen Nightingale. It was educational, well organized, with excellent food and music and so much fun!! We didn’t want the trip to end but sadly it did and yet we have the memories that will last a lifetime.
Thank you John and Maureen for your very visible and tender love. Thank you John for your wonderful storytelling, for your big heart and unselfishness, for your friendship and for indeed being a Renaissance Man!
We love you and miss you terribly!
~Tom & Fern
