My condolences to Janice and the entire family .
I had the pleasure of coaching Bob his freshman and
sophomore cross country seasons ( 1973 and 74) at
Hamline University.
Bob was a standout runner at Johnson HS and he joined
a talented group of seven other freshmen in 1973 that
propelled HU to the MIAC championship, and to a
4th place finish at the Division III national championships.
In his sophomore season Bob moved up to seventh on
a 16 man team and ran at the DIII nationals where HU
placed 7th .
Bob continued his career with Kent Stahly as coach ,
and was on another MIAC championship team in 1975 ,
and was captain elect of the 1976 HU team .
He also was four year letter winner on the track team
which won the MIAC championship all four years !
Bob was a great team leader and a gritty runner who
competed while suffering from asthma his entire career.
He exemplified the spirit and hard work which made
HU teams so successful . His being elected captain
his senior season was a great tribute to his character.
I, and all his teammates, will miss him .

Q: What will you never forget about Robert?
A: Bob was an all around nice guy, loyal, hard working and devoted family man. What will I never forget about Bob? He was the Best Man at my wedding. I was his Best Man. Bob was my son’s godfather. I will never forget our friendship developed through high school and running hundreds of miles together as Cross Country and Track teammates. We enjoyed so many good times together and an occasional beer. In adulthood we stayed in contact even after I left the Eastside serving a carrier in the Navy. Bob, I’ll miss our annual phone calls on our respective birthdays and get togethers whenever I was in the Twin Cities area. I will miss you buddy.
