Obituary of Edith Broten

Edith Broten - 96 Years old Edith was born in St. Cloud Township, Minnesota to John and Phebe Johnson on July 29, 1928 and passed away on January 14, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Jim; and her brothers Philip (Eunice), Edgar (Dorothy), and Arthur (Joyce) Johnson. She is survived by her daughters Martha (Gary) Crawmer and Becky (Blane) White; grandchildren Laura Muellner, Eric (Chasity) Muellner, Linnea (Aaron) Geddes, Danica (Jerrin) Sibychan and Marita White; and sister-in-law Janice Broten. Edith attended school in Waite Park and St. Cloud, receiving a bachelor’s degree in education, and discovered that she loved teaching. She taught math and science at Central High School in St. Paul until the birth of her first daughter. After her children were grown, she spent several years substitute teaching at Minnehaha Academy. Her faith in Jesus was important to her. She was very active at Maplewood Covenant Church, teaching Sunday School, serving on the board, singing in the choir, and working in the church office in later years. She was involved in the Northwest Covenant Conference Christian Education Board and Twin Cities Covenant Women. She served on the Board of Education at Minnehaha Academy from 1996 to 2001. Edith loved animals and had pet Siamese cats for most of her adult life. She enjoyed gardening and the great outdoors. After Jim’s retirement, the two of them took annual weeklong canoe camping trips in Voyageurs National Park. Edith loved her family very much. Family gatherings were filled with warmth and laughter. Her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews were blessed to have her in their lives for so many years, and will cherish the many happy memories. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Minnehaha Academy, or charity of donor’s choice. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25 at Roseville Covenant Church, 2865 Hamline Avenue North.
