James W. "Jim" Stanway, 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 10, 2014. Jim was
born in Saint Paul on September 26, 1934, to the late James, Sr., and Cecelia (Peltier) Stanway. An Eagle Scout and athlete, Jim graduated from Johnson Senior High in 1952. He earned his degree in Chemistry from Hamline University in 1956 where he was later inducted to its Athletic Hall of Fame in Swimming in 1986. Also in 1956, he married Elsi (Howie) of Saint Paul. Jim gained a Master of Arts in Chemistry Education from the University of Indiana (Bloomington) in 1970. Although Jim began his career as a research chemist at 3M Company, he found his true calling teaching students at Kellogg and Roseville Area High Schools. There he brought physics and chemistry to life with passion and creativity, receiving recognition for outstanding contributions to science education. Jim enjoyed being a coach and referee for boys and girls USA and high school swim teams. Jim was an active member of First Evangelical Free Church of Maplewood. Jim is survived by his wife Elsi and their three children, Nancy Suzanne (Philip) Falconer, Pamela (Jim) Spooner, and James (Kari) Stanway, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, as well as his sister Janet (Richard) Barnes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to First Evangelical Free Church of Maplewood, New Life Homes or GlobalFingerprints. A visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Thursday, June 12 at First Evangelical Free Church of Maplewood. There will also be a short visitation from 10:00-11:00 preceding the Friday June 13 funeral service at 11:00 at First Evangelical Free Church of Maplewood, 2696 Hazelwood Street, Maplewood, MN 55109.
