Obituary of Elmer Svendsen

Born 2/11/19 in Taylors Falls, MN. Preceded in death by parents, Lauritz and Johanna Svendsen, 1 brother & 5 sisters. Survived by beloved wife of 66 years, Marion; children, Dennis (Marie) Svendsen, Joanne Svendsen, & Linnea (Kip) Sundgaard; grandchildren, Heather (Scott) Drentlaw, Melissa Thomas, Kelsey Svendsen, William Svendsen, Sven Sundgaard, Sonja (Patrick) Kania, and Sverre Sundgaard; great-grandchildren, Jordyn Thomas, McKenna & Melya Drentlaw, Owen & Henry Kania; brother, Walter Svendsen. At age four, the family moved to St. Paul's East Side. Graduated from Johnson High School in 1937. Served four years as a Sgt. with the Army in the Pacific Theater, including battles of Saipan, Tinian, & Okinawa. Employed 34 years as a postman, the last 20 years serving the Gladstone area. A 70-year member of NALC & Branch 28 retiree. Member of Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church since 1948. Inducted into Old Timers Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame. Spent many enjoyable weeks with family & friends at the family cabin every summer for the past 50 years. Elmer & Marion enjoyed traveling & visited most of the 50 states, the British Isles, Scandinavia, & 8 countries in Europe. Elmer & Marion were caregivers to several elderly family members over the years & were always ready to help anyone in need. The house he helped to build & his garden & flowers were his pet projects. Funeral Service 11 AM on Wed., Sept. 24 at GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1669 Arcade St (Hwy 61), St. Paul. Visitation 4-7 PM on Tue., Sept. 23 and one hour prior to the service, both also at church. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.
