Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Preceded in death by his brothers Wallace and Donald. Survived by Betty, his wife of 64 1/2 years; son, Rick Nelson (Marsha); daughter, Barb Nelson; favorite granddaughter, Andrea & grandsons, Eric, Brian & Nick. Also survived by his nieces & nephews. Dick belonged to many organizations including the Hamm's Indians Drum and Bugle Corp, VFW, American Legion, The $1.99 (now $8.99) Breakfast Club and Norske Torske Klubben (his last outing). He was baptized, confirmed and married at Arlington Hills Lutheran Church. Dick was a Co-Founder of the popular Lichtenstein Nein German Band ("Available for Wakes, Weddings and Fancy Balls"). He was the lead (only) Tuba player for nearly 50 years. He was an avid golfer until he was 85. He and Betty belonged to Forest Hills Country Club where he was very proud of his 2 holes-in-one (but only after Betty had one first). Dick was born to Swedish parents on the East Side where his family struggled through the Depression. He played trumpet in the Johnson High School Band and graduated in 1943. He proudly served in the 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Division and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star & Purple Heart. He served in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Dick graduated from Globe Business College. In 1950, Betty and Dick began their long and wonderful life together. They lovingly raised their two children in Maplewood. He worked as Manager of East Side Loan Company and as Vice President of North Central Life Insurance. Dick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at their cabin and traveling with Betty. His gentle nature and good humor will be missed by all those who knew him. Memorial Service 11 AM Tuesday, Dec. 23 at Arlington Hills Lutheran Church, 1115 Greenbrier St, St. Paul, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
