I am honored to have purchased two of Donald Nolan's pictures of clowns that he painted in 1967 in Anchorage, Alaska. I bought both of his framed pictures in order to keep the two together and they will be displayed on my living room wall in Desert Hot Springs, California. Most people remember Donald only as a skillful tattoo artist without realizing that he was also a talented painter of pictures. I have included his two paintings that I bought.

I was heartbroken to hear of Nolan's passing. He put a lot of ink on Tommy and me and we will cherish his work and his memory. It was always fun to stop in and see what he was up to and hear his stories. What an interesting and wonderful man.

I first met Don at an NTA convention many years ago. I was in awe of him as l'd seen his work and done some pieces off his flash. He was always down to earth, open and honest, ready to talk and never cruel with his criticisms. His work was truly incredible and will earn him a place of recognition and respect in our history. Though we spoke together many times over the years l wish we could speak again. He will be sorely missed. I send my condolences to his loved ones and hope to offer some comfort in the fact that Love never dies but lives on forever!
Sincerely,
J. S. Morse

Words cannot express how very sorry I am for your loss. I did not have the privilege of knowing Donald, but as highlighted in the messages, he seemed like an amazing special person. May the sweet memories of your dear Donald and scriptures such as Acts 24:15 and Psalms 37:29 bring comfort and hope to your heart during this difficult time.

Tanika and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Nolan passing.
I always enjoy dropping by the shop just to say hello and seeing everyone and hearing Nolan telling me "CONGRATULATIONS" for every year of sobriety I got and approving the tattoos to commemorate that year.

Don,
Thank you for the knowledge and the motivation and inspiration I received from you. I will never forget the first time I met you at Dave Yurkew's shop. That was one of the most important days of my life. I am very proud to say that even though I didn't have a real apprenticeship with you, I learned more than anyone could have ever hoped for in the time I got to spend with you. I am proud to say you have had such an influence on my life. I am still waiting for the tattoo machine we talked about 25 years ago. I would consider you a friend and a great man. May God speed.

From the bottom of our hearts, Studio Tattoo sends our love and regards to a man that influenced a young woman in the 1980’s to become the tattoo lady of Las Vegas! Danté was given the honer of her name and cartouche by studying under her mentor Nolan. His love and knowledge of tattooing and lore, helped break an artistic boundary that the west had little knowledge of at that time. As the second generation Studio Tattoo owners we are proud to continue his love and passion of tattooing for many more generations to come!

I remember when Don came to Tampa years ago to buy a sail boat. He stayed with me, tattooed me and married a friend of mine in my front yard. It was very special. He was kind and a good man. He was a genius and helped all of us tattooers by His contributions of flash drawings and examples of His work. He will be remembered always and missed greatly.

I met Don in California in the 70's when I was down to long Beach to visit my brother Drip, His home was adorned with his art work that looked so real that the picture of the bathroom upstairs looked like the real bathroom door was open and you could just walk right in. He offered to do a small tat for me and i am afraid of needles so i said no, but am regretting that. i have not seen him since the 70's but he did a painting of me which my mom bought, and memories of him are great! He was an awesome person and I am sorry for the family's loss

Don Nolan was a genius, an inavator, an inspiration to a generation of tattooers without them realizing it was him who was inspiring them. I started tattooing in the era of the Spaulding & Rogers catalog. It was filled with tiny thumbnail versions of basic images, standard fair. But then you got to the stuff Don Nolan drew, it was like flipping a switch. Even the standard stuff was drawn in such a way that it was reinvented. The use of line and shading was cleaner the angles the perspective was different. I don’t know how many of my peers from that era spent as long as I did with a maginifying glass dissecting the images or noticed the birth of the whacky take on tattooing. Making the ideas fun but subtle. Don made it ok for us to take ourselves slightly less serious if we took the craft seriously. You could tattoo a frog farting a butterfly if it was drawn well and executed perfectly. It was like he signed our permission slips to get super weird. I’ve always thought of him as one of the unsung heroes of tattooing. I had gotten to hang out with him a few times at conventions. It was always a fun time & an honor. Thank you Mr Nolan for helping me be a better tattooer 28 years later I’m still just that kid looking at your flash with a magnifying glass wondering if I’ll ever be that cool.
I regret that I won’t be able to make it to St Paul for the services but know that I will be toasting him & singing his praises here in Oregon.
Ride in eternal sunshine.

Nolan just inked me in August for the 2nd time. Right before he began, he mentioned that he had turned 85 in March! I was surprised, but I didn't hesitate to allow him to do his artwork! He had given me my first tattoo when I was 3 weeks away from 30 and trying to get over a fear of needles. What I didn't know was that tattooing uses a different type of needle! To this day, 15 years later, I receive compliments on my dolphin tattoo that Nolan gave me.
I'm so sorry for his loss and will always remember him fondly!
